Deepika Padukone Exits Kalki 2898 AD Sequel, Starts Work on New Film King with Shah Rukh Khan
Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has withdrawn from two high-profile film projects, but has immediately moved forward by commencing work on another major production. She will star alongside Shah Rukh Khan in King, their sixth film together, following recent exits from Spirit directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD.
Producers of Kalki 2898 AD officially announced that Deepika will not be part of the upcoming sequel. They cited that although a long journey had already been invested into the project, they could not reach a partnership that met the level of commitment required for a film of that scale. The statement wished her the best in her future endeavors.
Earlier this year, Deepika had sectioned out from Spirit, in which she was originally cast with actor Prabhas. Following the changes, Triptii Dimri reportedly joined the cast of Spirit.
Undeterred by her recent project changes, Deepika marked a fresh beginning with King. She shared a picture on social media from the first day of filming, showing her hand in hand with Shah Rukh Khan. Alongside the image, she posted an emotional note recalling the lessons she learned nearly 18 years ago on the set of Om Shanti Om. She reflected that the experience of making a movie—especially the people you make it with—matters far more than its success. She added that this philosophy has guided her decisions ever since and hinted that this is a reason she is returning to work with Shah Rukh Khan yet again.
Deepika and Shah Rukh’s on-screen pairing has been well-received in the past, with successful collaborations such as Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Pathaan, and Jawan. King is shaping up to be another high-profile project, given the duo’s starpower and audience expectations.
While reasons detailed publicly for her departure from Kalki 2898 AD and Spirit remain limited to statements about commitment and partnership, her prompt transition to King signals readiness to move past controversies. Fans and industry watchers will be watching closely how King progresses, both as a film and as a demonstration of Deepika’s evolving choices in her career.
