Intense thundershowers returned to Hyderabad Thursday afternoon after a short break, drenching large parts of the eastern and north-eastern regions of the city and causing widespread disruption. Localities such as LB Nagar, Uppal, Habsiguda, Ramanthapur, Amberpet, Tarnaka, and Moula Ali were particularly hard hit, along with areas in Secunderabad including Neredmet, Alwal, Bowenpally, Safilguda, Yapral, Thumukunta, Kapra, ECIL, Sainikpuri and Dammaiguda.

The downpour, which lasted nearly an hour, left roads waterlogged and traffic snarled on major stretches. Two-wheeler riders sought shelter under Hyderabad Metro bridges and stations, especially along the LB Nagar–Nagole–Uppal route. The Habsiguda–Tarnaka stretch was also severely affected with long delays. Secunderabad’s SD Road and RP Road saw congestion after heavy rain in Marredpally and adjacent colonies.

By evening the rain tapered off into drizzle, but skies remained overcast.

The sudden return of rain comes after heavy overnight precipitation which already had left several parts of the city soaked. Earlier in the week, as many as 26 localities recorded over 100 mm of rainfall, with Musheerabad seeing up to 184.5 mm. Many other core areas in Secunderabad suffered severe waterlogging.

Amid the current downpour, many residents faced difficulty commuting, especially in low lying areas where drainage is weak and roads lack proper water flow management. The inundation of streets aggravated traffic movement, impacting office-goers and essential services.

Authorities have been put on alert with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more thundershowers in the evening. Residents have been urged to avoid non-essential travel during peak rain periods and to exercise caution in areas prone to flooding.

In past incidents, heavy rains have led to dangerous water currents under underpasses and railway bridges, occasionally causing accidents. Concerns have also been raised about infrastructure resilience, particularly related to drainage systems and the upkeep of stormwater drains.

As Hyderabad remains under weather pressure, civic bodies and traffic authorities are coordinating responses to manage traffic, clear waterlogged roads, and ensure safety for commuters. The latest spell of rain underscores the challenges the city continues to face during the monsoon season.
