Why Was Covert Exfil Removed in Warzone?

Call of Duty Warzone Season 1 Reloaded, launched on 17th January 2024, introduced new content including the Champion’s Quest, the Gulag Night Vision Public Event, and new features like the Covert Exfil. Covert Exfil was a highly anticipated feature that allowed players to exit a match early, and it was intended to complement the new single Weapon Case feature. However, both of these new additions were removed from the game shortly after their introduction. Here is a look into Covert Exfil in Warzone and the reasons behind its removal.

Covert Exfil in Warzone

With the Warzone Season 1 Reloaded update, players were given the ability to exfil (exfiltrate) the match early using Covert Exfil. This feature allowed players to purchase up to five exfils from Buy Stations before the Gulag closes. When an exfil was used, a helicopter would appear to fly the player and their squad out of the battlefield, potentially with a Weapon Case in their inventory.

The Weapon Case, also introduced in the update, spawned in a small search area at the start of every match. The player holding the Weapon Case was marked for all enemies in the match. If a player holding the case managed to stay alive until the end of the match or if their squad exited the match using a helicopter called in by purchasing a Covert Exfil, they and their teammates would earn exclusive rewards. Raven Software also set up a new Covert Exfil leaderboard stat for players to compete in, where successful Covert Exfils would be tracked separately from traditional wins and would not count towards Champion’s Quest progress.

Why was Covert Exfil Removed?

However, the feature was subsequently removed soon after its introduction. Fans expressed disapproval, with many asking for it to be limited to Limited Time Modes (LTMs). The feature would have allowed up to five teams to purchase a Covert Exfil and leave the match early, which would award them a “win” in the Covert Exfil leaderboard section. In response to the backlash, Raven Software decided to remove both Covert Exfil and the Weapon Case from the game.

According to the developer, Covert Exfil and the Weapon Case feature will be held back until a new mode launches.
