Beloved Android App Nova Launcher Officially Shuts Down

Nova Launcher, one of Android’s most popular third-party launchers, is coming to an end. The app’s founder, Kevin Barry, has announced that he has left the company that owns Nova, confirming that the launcher will no longer receive updates or be released as open-source.

Barry made the announcement on September 6. He revealed that after the company Branch acquired Nova Launcher in 2022, he had been working toward opening the app’s source code, cleaning up its codebase, and preparing for community involvement. However, he says leadership at Branch asked him to cease work on the open-source transition. With Barry now completely disengaged, the launcher’s future looks uncertain.

Long-time users are deeply disappointed. After more than a decade of enabling significant customization — everything from home-screen layout tweaks to app drawer changes and gesture customizations — Nova had built up a dedicated base. Fans have described it as “legendary” and a core part of their Android experience. Reddit threads are filled with nostalgia and gratitude from those who’ve used Nova through many devices and Android versions.

Over the past couple of years, Nova Launcher had already been operating under constrained conditions. Following the acquisition, Branch introduced new features based on deep user analytics. Later, major developer layoffs at Branch left Barry as the primary maintainer. The last stable release of Nova Launcher dropped in May 2024. Until now, the app has continued to function and be available for download — though without future updates, it’s expected to become outdated as system changes over time make compatibility more challenging.

Users are now faced with a choice: continue using Nova Launcher while it works, or begin looking for alternatives. Several other launchers are available offering various combinations of customization, performance, and support.

Barry has expressed appreciation to the user community, saying that feedback on the announcement has been heartfelt. While many are sad over the closure, Nova’s legacy in helping shape Android’s flexibility and personalization remains secure.
