RALEIGH - Two alarms were struck at 4903 Arcadian Court on Friday, March 5. Engine 19 arrived with heavy fire showing from the second story and roof in the rear of a two-story, wood-frame apartment building with 10,356 square-feet. A second alarm was requested on arrival.
Flames quickly spread across the roof, with wind conditions contributing. Heavy smoke surrounding the front of structure also obscured operations. Crews were withdrawn and a defensive attack was soon started.
Battalion 1 had Command. Ladder 2 and Engine 15 with deck guns were deployed in front of the structure; Ladder 5 was deployed in the rear of the structure. The Command Post, medical monitoring and rehab were located on Arcadian Court. Staging was located on the adjoining Wallingford Drive.
Five hydrants were utilized, including Arcadian Court to Engine 19, Wallingford Drive to Engine 21, Pebble Beach Drive to Ladder 5, and Tapers Drive to New Hope Engine 1.
The incident was dispatched at 15:12 hours; the fire was reported controlled at 16:16. No injuries were reported. Eight apartments were destroyed, with seven families and 19 people displaced.
The cause was determined as accidental, with wind spreading fireplace ashes which were placed into a container on a back deck.
