RALEIGH - Two alarms were struck at 6149 St. Giles Street on Saturday morning. Engine 17 was first on scene and reported heavy smoke showing from the second floor of a three-story, brick/frame apartment.
Battalion 4 assumed command on arrival and requested a second alarm within a couple minutes. Fire spread from the second floor through the third floor and into the attic.
Ladder 3 arrived with Engine 17. It was positioned in front of the structure and was utilized for roof access. Ladder 6 arrived with the second alarm, and was directed behind the building.
Both deployed master streams after the fire broke through the roof.
Twelve apartments were damaged, and eight people were displaced. One resident was transported with smoke inhalation. The fire was reported at 9:28 a.m.
Investigators determined that unattended cooking caused the fire, which started in the kitchen of a rear-unit on the second floor.
With temperatures below freezing, a salt truck was special called for ice hazards.
