RALEIGH - Extreme environmental conditions challenged Raleigh Fire Department and Wake County EMS personnel at a house fire at 2311 Byrd Street Sunday evening. Dispatched at 6:19 p.m., it was reported as a grill fire that spread to the structure.
Engine 6 was first on scene at a two-story, brick residence with 2,569 square-feet. They reported a working fire, with flames on both the rear deck and in a rear room of the 1930s structure. After also spreading to the attic and through the roof, the fire was quickly controlled.
Approximately 10 minutes into the incident, Car 5 requested a second alarm to relieve personnel due to the extreme heat. The temperature was in the high nineties.
Wake County EMS provided medical monitoring and aggressive rehab efforts. Due to the weather, EMS personnel were actively pre-hydrating fire crews.
First alarm fire units included Engine 6, Engine 5, Engine 9, Engine 13, Ladder 1, Rescue 14, Battalion 2, Car 5, Car 20, and Air 8.
Second alarm fire units included Engine 16, Engine 1, Engine 3, Ladder 16, Rescue 7, Battalion 3, Battalion 4, Car 2, and Field Comm 1.
EMS units included EMS 2, EMS 8, EMS 31, District 2, District 5, and special operations Truck 1.
The cause of the fire was determined as a gas grill malfunction. No injuries were reported and crews cleared the scene at 9:11 p.m.
