Duplin County

DUPLIN COUNTY - On Saturday, February 6th, members of the Chinquapin Fire and EMS Department conducted the largest live burn exercise in the county to date.

The old Chinquapin Elementary Schooll as well as the Teacher Housing Building was burned for training. The buildings are scheduled for demolition to make room for ball fields and parking for the Chinquapin Parks and Recreation.

Additional participating agencies included Lyman (Duplin 15), Fountaintown (12), Pin Hook (17), Kenansville (1), Beulaville (6), Potters Hills (19), Greenevers (14) and Northeast (9). Chinquapin and Duplin EMS provided medical monitoring and rehab for firefighters.

Interior evolutions were conducted on the Teacher Housing Building with teams of four entering the structure to extinguish the fire and conduct searches.

Companies also practiced performing vertical ventilation on both structures.

When the school was set ablaze, units operated aerial streams, water shuttle points and tanker shuttles.

Over 120 personnel were on scene to participate.
