GASTON COUNTY - At 09:28 hours on Monday, January 25th, 2010, Crowder’s Mountain Fire and Rescue received a dispatch call for an overturned tanker truck at 5401 York Highway in Gaston County.
Captain Gary Adair from Crowder’s Mountain was first on scene and witnessed the truck on its side in the median of York Highway and leaking the gasoline it was transporting.
Realizing the magnitude if the incident, he immediately requested multiple units to the scene including the City of Gastonia Fire Department’s Hazardous Material Team.
Firefighters worked for several hours spraying the area with Class B foam to contain the vapors, patching holes in the ruptured gas tank of the tanker truck, and then flushing out the remaining fuel in the tank.
York Highway (Hwy 321) north and southbound lanes were closed for the entire operation.
The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident, and no injuries were reported to any personnel who responded to the call.
Departments on the call were Crowder’s Mountain Fire & Rescue, the City of Gastonia Fire Department, Union Road Volunteer Fire Department, Clover Fire Department, Lowell Fire Department, Community Fire Department and GEMS Gaston County. Gaston County Red Cross supplied food for the rescue personnel on scene.
All travel lanes of York Highway were re-opened at 16:15 hours.
