PLEASANT HILL - February 26th, 1958 was the first in a series of meetings to form what is now known as the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. In March of the same year, a Board of Directors was elected, and in June a Fire Chief was named. On Saturday November 8, 1958 the first truck, a 1958 Chevrolet/Howe Pumper was delivered and the department was then officially on call.
On Saturday September 20, 2008, the firefighters, Board of Directors, and Ladies Auxiliary hosted a 50th Anniversary Celebration at its station on Austin-Traphill Road just west of Elkin. The event was held in conjunction with it’s annual Fall Fun Day.
The days activities that started at 10:00am included bouncers, games, and fire safety house for the children, free hot dogs, drinks, sno-cones and cotton candy; a slide show that included photos from the past 50 years, an equipment displays that included gear from both past and present, and the departments original truck that had been recently restored.
Among the 300 plus guests in attendance included three of the departments original charter members - James Chatman, Herbert Transou and Howard Alexander as well as Juanita Teague, widow of the departments first Chief and one of the driving forces in organizing the department. Bryce Teague served as chief from 1958 to 1978.
At 2:00 pm, there was a cake cutting ceremony to commemorate the 50th Anniversary. Chief Brian Dudley thanked those in attendance for the support shown to the fire department, he also recognized the original charter members along with three of the department’s former chiefs who were on hand for the event.
