New Slide Show Added (August 18, 2008)

ROBBINS - Moore County fire companies are fighting a fire at the old Milliken Plant in Robbins on Hemp Street Sunday morning.

Additional companies have been called from Randolph and Chatham counties.

Interior crews have reported a flash-over. Additional companies have been called for tankers.

Details on the property.

See our Incident Reports for initial details of this incident.

UPDATE (13:30)

Officials on scene are concerned about asbestos exposure. They are also concerned about a steam tower that is on the northwest corner of the property, and its potential collapse.

This historic structure in Robbins is the location where failed Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards announced his campaign for the White House.

UPDATE (13:55)

Officials are concerned about the amount of water left in Robbins, and are initiating tanker shuttles from distant locations.

A three-block area has been evacuated with a shelter established at a local school.

The property was unoccupied and currently is on the market.

Extensive mutual aid is being used for coverage of depleted fire companies.

(Thanks to Thomas Babb, CFP-799, on scene.)

UPDATE (14:50)

The old mill in Robbins had been brought recently, according to a story published in the Jan. 10 edition of The Pilot.

EVH Supply Co. of Randleman bought the approximately 300,000-square-foot mill to house a plant that was going to make paper products that it markets all over the country.

It was thought that the plant could bring more than 200 jobs to the area when it was in full operation.
