CARY - Four fire departments responded to a fiery, five-vehicle motor-vehicle collision during rush hour Monday evening on Interstate 40. Western Wake Pumper 196 found a well involved, overturned semi-truck on the shoulder of westbound I-40 at Wade Avenue about 18:45 hours.

The truck driver was pulled by bystanders from the burning cab. He was transported with serious burns to the NC Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill by EMS 4, the first of several Wake County and Cary EMS units at the scene.

Burning fuel also spilled from the cab of the 18-wheeler, which was transporting garbage, and started a rapidly spreading brush and woods fire.

The Western Wake Fire Chief arrived in Car 190 and assumed Incident Command. Western Wake Pumper 196, Swift Creek Engine 3 and Morrisville Engine 1 stretched lines to both attack the truck cab, and contain the brush fire.

Western Wake Tanker 198 established a shuttle to provide water supply, and was later joined by Swift Creek Engine 3.

Foam was used to assist with suppression of the burning garbage and fuel. Additional units were requested for water, foam, and manpower. Crews were assisted by Cary Engine 2 and Western Wake Brush 299.

Meanwhile in the eastbound lanes, under direction of Cary Battalion 2, two patients in a passenger vehicle were extricated by Cary Engine 1, Ladder 1, Rescue 2, and Western Wake Rescue 295.

Medical resources at the scene included EMS 4, EMS 51, EMS 52, EMS 54, Medic 94, District 2, and MD 20. EMS personnel remained on scene during fire suppression operations, for medical monitoring and rehab.

State troopers closed all eastbound lanes during the incident. Traffic on the westbound lanes was reduced to a single lane.
