Johnston County
SELMA - Emergency crews found a mother and her child dead after a fire at Redwood Village Apartments near U.S. Highway 301 in Selma Wednesday morning, according to Fire Chief Phillip McDaniel.
Authorities are investigating how they died. Their names and ages have not been released. The State Bureau of Investigation was also at the scene.
Residents at the apartment said the woman was in her 20s and had an infant son. She kept to herself and was going to school, they said.
Residents who witnessed Wednesday’s fire said they banged on the woman’s door and tried to break it down, but no one ever responded. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate the child in an ambulance but were not successful, witnesses said.
The fire was reported around 4 a.m. and was contained in Apartment E on the second floor, McDaniel said. The Red Cross is assisting eight residents who were also affected by the fire.
