More Charges Filed Against Fire Department Veteran

Alamance County

SNOW CAMP - More charges have been filed against a 13-year veteran of the Snow Camp Volunteer Fire Department, after deputies said they uncovered more goods and funds the man embezzled.

Andrew Francis Pates, 65, a former treasurer at the department, was charged last October with embezzling more than $11,000.

Further investigation revealed that Pates embezzled an additional $12,000 worth of goods from Office Depot, $15,000 cash, $8,000 in unauthorized payroll and more than $1,000 in postage, deputies said.

Deputies alleged that the more $51,000 was embezzled between 2002 and October 2008.

Sheriff’s department spokesman Randy Jones said last October that the department’s Board of Directors began an investigation after noticing discrepancies in its financial records.

The additional charges were leveled against Pates on Thursday and he was being held on a $30,000 bond.
