Randolph County
RANDLEMAN - Randleman’s city manager and fire department chief will make a special trip to Florida next week to check on the final construction of the city’s new fire truck.
The trip will be especially pleasant for city officials because they expect to tell the builders that they will be paying cash — a total of $470,893 — for the emergency vehicle, upon satisfactory delivery.
City Manager Tony Sears was able to tell Randleman’s board of aldermen the good news Tuesday night at the board’s regularly scheduled meeting. The board voted unanimously to authorize the payment for the truck.
“If we can pay cash and avoid those interest payments, I would rather do that than give the money to a bank,” Alderman Charles Byerly said.
The original plan was to pay $100,000 in a down payment for the truck and finance the balance, Sears said. However, upon completion of the 2007-08 audit of city finances, Sears said auditors informed him that the city has a surplus of $561,359 for that budget year.
“We can pay cash and still have roughly $191,000 left over,” he told aldermen. “Paying cash — that’s the way I like it.”
