Major Gas Line Fire Burns for Hours

CARY - Firefighters in Cary apply
master streams to an eight inch gas line that was struck by a
construction crew around 11:00 today. The fire burned until just
after 17:00. A large hospital, office buildings and two major
shopping centers were nearby exposures. A major thoroughfare in Cary
will be closed for hours. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

MVC on Interstate 85

ALAMANCE COUNTY - On Interstate 85 this
morning just north of Exit 140 a truck, SUV and car collided. Three
patients were transported. Burlington, Elon and Whitsett responded.
Gibsonville provided coverage. Additional units were special called
to deal with a diesel fuel spill. This was the second major crash on
I-85 today.

Two Tractor-Trailers Collide

HAYWOOD COUNTY -
This crash involved two
tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 at the 7.5 mile-marker. One
driver was flown to Mission Hospital in Asheville while the other
was transported to Haywood Regional Medical Center. Both drivers
required extrication. Junaluska Fire and Haywood Rescue responded.
Traffic was diverted for several hours.

NCFFF Looking for
Assistance at State Fair

RALEIGH - The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation is
looking for volunteers to help staff the booth at the NC State Fair
this year. It will be held in Raleigh on Oct 12-21, 2007. Volunteers
are requested if possible to sign up for 1 or more shifts.

Long Time Cumberland Fire Chief Dies

FAYETTEVILLE - We regret to report
the passing of one of the remaining original founding members of the
Cumberland County Volunteer Fire Service. Retired Fire Chief Perry
Smith of Lafayette Village Fire Department Station 7 passed away
Tuesday around 4:15 p.m. He was 91 years old.
He began his fire service around 1956
shortly after Lafayette Village Fire Department was organized. He
became Chief on December 8, 1958 and served in that position until
his retirement on July 1, 1981.
Arrangements are being provided by Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills
and the family has requested no flowers, but if you wish to send a
memorial contribution to the church, then please do so to the St.
Matthews United Methodist Church at 202 Hope Mills Rd.
The Family will be at the church on
Wednesday night between 6-8 PM. Viewing will also be at the church
on Thursday between 11 am & 1 PM. Internment will be at Cumberland
Memorial Gardens on Raeford Rd next to William H Owen Elementary
School following the viewing. Also if a firefighter is planning to
attend, please be in a fire department uniform.
