SUBMITTED BY TERRI BYERS, HICKORY FD
HICKORY - The Hickory Jaycees has named Heidi Heavner, fire
apparatus driver with the Hickory Fire Department as “Outstanding
Young Public Servant of the Year”. She was presented the award on
Friday, April 20. Heavner, who began work with Hickory Fire
Department in 2003, was nominated for her outstanding work as a
firefighter and fire service instructor.
One example of Heidi’s dedication occurred when she went above and
beyond the call of duty to work with Western Piedmont Community
College to develop an “On Line” firefighter I and II level program,
which is the first to be done in the State. Completion of this
training is no small task and required many months of training,
research, and dedication to develop this new program designed to
reach new firefighters and to teach them with new technology.
