SMITHFIELD - Members of the
Smithfield Fire Department are very proud of the new rescue/mini
pumper placed into service two weeks ago. To save
money, Fire Chief Patrick Harris purchased the bare truck
and body, and firefighters did all the up-fit work in their spare
time. "They did an outstanding job,” Chief Harris said of
the hundreds of hours put into Rescue 2. Lieutenant John Blanton designed the up-fit
and personnel installed radios, lights, wiring, generator, and pump.
The department paid $85,000 for the truck and body. By doing their
own work, they saved the town $65,000 on the cost of the up-fitting.
Chief Harris
said firemen went above and beyond their call of duty. The year-long
project ended this month when the unit was put into service. Rescue
2 will be the first truck to leave the station when responding
to all motor vehicle accidents as well as brush fires. The 2006 Ford F-550
rescue/mini-pumper has four-wheel drive, a crew cab, and carries 250 gallons of water. It will complement the
larger Rescue 1. With the new unit now in service, the Smithfield Fire Department
is now in the process of
being certified as a Heavy Rescue provider. When the certification
is obtained, they will be the first fire department in Johnston County to
achieve that status. |
