- Firefighter Jeff Cline and Captain Josh Crisp are pictured shaking hands with one of the residents of 2217 Startown Road after a stove fire damaged the home Wednesday afternoon. The fire was reported at approximately 12:18 p.m. Upon arrival just minutes later, firefighters reported smoke coming from the rear of the structure. Three engines, one ladder, one tanker, one support vehicle, and one command unit responded. Mountain View and Newton firefighters also responded. The fire was brought under control by 12:33 pm. The homeowner was not present at the time of the fire. No one was injured, although a dog was rescued from inside the structure. Fire investigators from the Catawba County Fire Marshal’s Office ruled the fire accidental. It started in the kitchen and caused an estimated $10,000 in damages. Catawba County EMS, Newton-Conover Rescue, NC Highway Patrol, and Catawba County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene.

CHARLOTTE - At approximately 10:00 am on Tuesday, the Charlotte Fire Department was dispatched to an electrocution on the roof of a business in the 1900 Block of North Davidson Street. Crews found a man atop a single-story taxpayer who had been shocked by a low voltage line. Due to the nature of the roof and potential injuries, Battalion 1, Ladder 1, and Rescue 10 were dispatched to assist Engine 7 with a high-angle rescue from the roof. The patient was on the ground in less than thirty minutes and transported to the hospital by Medic.

RALEIGH - The Capital City's newest fire station is nearly ready. Fire Station 28 at 3500 Forestville Road is expected to open early next week. The $2.3 million, 9,960 square-foot facility will house a single engine company as well as three pieces of antique apparatus: a 1905 American LaFrance steamer, a 1926 American LaFrance pumper, and a 1950 Mack pumper. It is also the first three-bay fire station built by the city since Station 1 was completed in 1953. Station 28 is located in the Wake Crossroads community in northeast Raleigh.

WAKE FOREST
- Strong wind gusts on Monday after heavy rains on Sunday kept Wake Forest firefighters busy clearing downed trees from roadways. Pictured is a oak tree that reportedly dated back to the Civil War. Two vehicles were destroyed by the fallen oak and two others were heavily damaged. Firefighters removed two other trees of similar size and several smaller trees from area roadways.

CHARLOTTE - Just after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, the Charlotte Fire Department was called to the Park Road Shopping Center for smoke and fire reported coming from the roof area. Crews quickly gained access to the fire that originated above Family Hair Care. The blaze was extinguished in under thirty minutes and a nearby grocery store was temporarily evacuated. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at approximately $10,000. Fire Investigators traced the origin of the fire to the roof and attic area and have not ruled out a lightning strike as a possible cause.

SMITHFIELD - Members of the Smithfield Fire Department are very proud of the new rescue/mini pumper placed into service two weeks ago. To save money, Fire Chief Patrick Harris purchased the bare truck and body, and firefighters did all the up-fit work in their spare time. "They did an outstanding job,” Chief Harris said of the hundreds of hours put into Rescue 2. Lieutenant John Blanton designed the up-fit and personnel installed radios, lights, wiring, generator, and pump. The department paid $85,000 for the truck and body. By doing their own work, they saved the town $65,000 on the cost of the up-fitting.

Chief Harris said firemen went above and beyond their call of duty. The year-long project ended this month when the unit was put into service. Rescue 2 will be the first truck to leave the station when responding to all motor vehicle accidents as well as brush fires. The 2006 Ford F-550 rescue/mini-pumper has four-wheel drive, a crew cab, and carries 250 gallons of water. It will complement the larger Rescue 1. With the new unit now in service, the Smithfield Fire Department is now in the process of being certified as a Heavy Rescue provider. When the certification is obtained, they will be the first fire department in Johnston County to achieve that status.
