KILL DEVIL HILLS - Crews battled a two-alarm dwelling fire on March
17. Dispatched as a chimney fire about 5:30 p.m., arriving law officers found heavy
black smoke. As Engine 14 arrived,
a working fire was confirmed. The single-story block duplex with a
common attic proved a difficult fire to fight. Responders included Kill
Devil Hills, Colington, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, and Southern Shores
fire departments and Dare County EMS. No injuries were reported.

RALEIGH - More than 25 agencies participated in a disaster drill
at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Saturday. Conducted
on a closed runway, the exercise involved a commercial jet with
80 souls aboard and a reported fire in the cargo hold.
Arriving units found dozens of injured "victims" and many

JOHNSTON COUNTY - Units from Smithfield Fire-EMS and Brogden Fire responded to a fatal head-on
collision on March 20. Extensive extrication equipment was utilized by firefighters.
Air ambulances were unable to respond due to weather conditions. Troopers
blamed the accident on excessive speed on wet roads coupled with slick tires.

CORNELIUS
- On March 16 at 4:42 a.m. the Cornelius-Lemley Fire Department was
dispatched to a motor-vehicle accident on Interstate 77
southbound, south of exit 28. Engine 3 and Rescue 4 arrived
to find an overturned tractor-trailer with debris spread over the
roadway. The driver was out of the cab and not
injured. The tractor and trailer had separated and both saddle tanks
were full and leaking fuel. While firefighters were locating
one of the leaks they found a small fire in the engine compartment.
It was immediately extinguished with a dry powder extinguisher.
Firefighters contained the leaks using inflatable pools and by building
a dike. The leaks were controlled once the tractor was righted. Crews stayed on scene approximately two and a half
hours.

CHARLOTTE
- On March 11, the Charlotte Checkers Salute to Heroes honored firefighters, police officers, and the men and women of MEDIC. The
charity event included an opening ceremony, information booths, and
a Heroes Game following the Checkers game featuring the hockey teams
of the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC versus the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Mecklenburg County
Sherriff's Department. CFD/MEDIC won 6-4.

WINSTON-SALEM -
On March 11,
firefighters responded to
a house fire on Waughtown Street. Engine 11 arrived to find
a two-story house with heavy smoke visible. Crews faced heavy
smoke and heat conditions while battling the blaze. Additional
engines were called to help fight the fire and provide manpower.
There were no injuries. Units on scene: Engine 11, Engine 5,
Engine 19, Engine 18, Engine 12, Truck 2, Truck 5, Rescue 1, Air
Resource 1, and Battalion Chief 2. FCEMS and ARC provided medical
support and refreshments for personnel on scene.

CATAWBA FIREFIGHTER
SERIOUSLY INJURED

CATAWBA - On March 25 at approximately 12:30
a.m., Catawba Fire Department Firefighter Derek Poole, age 21, was involved in a
traffic accident while returning to the station from a fire call.
He was ejected from his vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center and transferred to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Firefighter Poole, who is also a member of the West Iredell
Volunteer Fire Department in Statesville, has undergone two
surgeries to his neck due to his injuries. Currently is in stable
but serious condition, he presently has no movement or feeling from
his chest down. The driver of the second vehicle received minor
injuries and refused transport by EMS at the scene.
The original call was a brush fire that had been unlawfully set. The unlawful burning is being investigated by the N.C.
Forestry Service. If you have information
