Two Onslow County Firefighters Killed

ONSLOW COUNTY - FireNews.net has confirmed that two Rhodestown firefighters were killed Saturday when their apparatus overturned while responding to a call. According the the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at 1159 hours.

Volunteer firefighters Billy Harold Williams and Brandon Michael Whimple were killed on Catherine Lake Road when their tanker overturned while responding mutual aid on a structure fire.

Arrangements have now been posted.

RALEIGH - Mush of West Raleigh was left in the dark when a Progress Energy substation on Glen Eden Drive east of Edwards Mill Road caught fire Friday evening. An ARFF unit from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport was special called to the scene.

Units included: E14, E16, E18, E8, L16, L20, R14, R19, BC3, BC4, Car 5, Air 8, HM2, HM22, Decon 1, Car 72, Car 3, Car 1, EMS 31, EMS 32, EMS 203.

WINSTON-SALEM - Early Monday morning March 12th, the Winston-Salem Fire Department responded to this two-alarm apartment fire on Bethania Station Road. Engine Company 14 was the first company to arrive on scene to find heavy flames visible from the Roof Division of a three story apartment building. The second alarm was quickly requested upon the arrival of Engine 14.

Truck Company 3's aerial ladder was placed on Division "A" and Truck Company 1's aerial ladder was placed on Division "D" of the structure for a defensive attack. The majority of the fire was concentrated on Division 3 and Roof Division of the structure.

The building was vacant at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported on scene. Units assigned were as follows: 1st Alarm: Engine 14, Engine 15, Engine 20, Truck 3, Rescue 1 and Battalion Chief 3. 2nd Alarm: Engine 8, Engine 9, Truck 1 and Battalion Chief 1. The Winston-Salem Fire Marshal's Office also responded for the investigation.

JOHNSTON COUNTY - Cleveland Fire and 50-210 EMS responded to a T-bone collision caused when a high school student ran a stop sign at an intersection. After removing the roof in a brief extrication, the patient was airlifted from the scene to Duke with critical injuries. The teen was transported via 50-210 EMS to WakeMed in Raleigh.

CONCORD - The City of Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety was dispatched at 12:30 pm on Tuesday to a house fire at 3525 Farm Lake Drive SW. The first unit arrived on the scene at 12:37 pm and reported smoke and flames visible. The fire was under control at 1:06 pm.

This fire started on the back porch and is still under investigation. Damage to the structure was estimated at $100,000.00. Four adults and four kids were displaced due to this fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the family as needed. Six units and a total of 22 Concord personnel responded to the scene.

 


Fatal Tanker Wreck Shuts Down Interstate 26

SKYLAND - The driver of a tanker truck was killed last Monday when his rig rolled over one and a half times, leading to a fuel leak that closed the busy Interstate for ten hours. Over sixty personnel responded. A ARFF unit from Asheville Regional Airport responded for foam applications.

FLETCHER - On March 10 at 1000 hours, a call came in for a three vehicle MVC on I-26 west bound at Exit 44. Engine 4, Engine 11, Truck 11, and Mountain Home Rescue 17 responded to the scene. Engine 4 arrived on scene to find one vehicle on its top and another vehicle on its side. The third vehicle was facing the opposite way of traffic. Both west bound lanes were shut down upon arrival. One patient was transported.
